A Peplum Made of Stitches

Pierpaolo Piccioli opens Balenciaga Summer 2027 on a white shirt whose peplum is built from rows of stitching. The same structure lands on a T-shirt, then a pink top grows a train over jeans.

How It's Made

One detail, closely read

A peplum made of stitches

What
A white shirt whose peplum is made of rows of stitching, not a separate piece.
How
The house says it is a couture stitching method from its 55th Couture Collection, now used in ready to wear. Dense rows pull the waist in and push the cloth out.
Why
Couture shaping lands on the most ordinary shirt in the room, and the structure sits on the surface where you can see it.

Look at Look 1 first. A crisp white long-sleeve shirt over cream trousers. From the chest up it reads like daywear. From the waist down, dense horizontal stitching packs the lower third of the cloth, pulls it in, and flares it into a peplum. The shaping sits on the surface. Balenciaga’s own Summer 2027 notes call this a couture stitching method, first used in the house’s 55th Couture Collection, brought into ready-to-wear to make new volume on cotton and leather. The house names the result as basque shapes shifted onto everyday pieces such as T-shirts.

What you can see in the still is the stitch field and the flare it holds. We do not claim what sits under the cloth. The house frames the method as couture technique moved into ready-to-wear; the runway shows that transfer on the most ordinary top in the room.

The same idea on a T-shirt

Same peplum language, now on a T-shirt.

Look 35 is the stitched white T-shirt over medium-wash blue jeans (with an orange tote). Evening volume on the plainest top. The house page says bias cutting also changes how jeans and shirts sit on the body. Piccioli has said he cut jeans on the bias, and that Cristóbal never used the bias. We attribute that claim to him. The stills show hang through the hip and thigh; they do not prove grain.

The T-shirt that grew a train

Volume at full joke

Look 58. Pale pink T-shirt lengthened into a trapeze with a train, still over blue jeans.
Closer. Pink volume up front; denim still visible underneath.

Look 58 stretches the joke: a pale pink top grown into a floor-length trapeze with a train, jeans showing at the front and the ankles. Funny and exact. Evening scale grafted onto the simplest top there is.

Why now

Most “couture on the street” talk stops at mood. This collection is clearest when stitch structure changes the silhouette. Look 1’s shirt peplum carries that idea hardest: you can point at the rows and say where the waist is built. The pink train is the same idea at full volume. For us, the white shirt still needs the Balenciaga name least to make sense of what you are seeing.

The next time a peplum looks like armour, ask whether it is a panel, a belt, or just stitches holding cloth into shape.
